Rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation, plain, and joint damage, brought on by abnormal autoimmune function. While exact causes of the condition are unknown, it is commonly understood throughout the medical community that factors such as genetics, nutrition, and environment can play a large role in the onset and worsening of the condition. Here are three factors that can impact rheumatoid arthritis:
Genetics. Genetics are thought to be the primary cause of rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have shown that people with specific generic markers related to the immune system and to chronic inflammation have exhibited a far greater risk of developing RA than people without those genes. 70% of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers are women.
Nutritional factors. Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis must cope with inflammation pain as well as having increased risk factors for unhealthy weight loss. RA patients may experience an increase in cytokine production, which speeds metabolism and protein breakdown. Without a balanced and nutritional diet, patients may struggle to maintain a healthy weight. On the other side of the spectrum, excess weight puts additional pressure on already inflamed joints. It is of utmost importance to ensure a nutrient and vitamin rich diet for better management of the condition, and it’s symptoms. Healthy oils and antioxidants are also beneficial to assist in prevention and management of RA.
Environmental factors. Smoking and food chemical ingestion are both thought to be environmental factors that impact the onset and aggravation of rheumatoid arthritis. Smoking is, of course, a risk for the smoker, but second-hand smoke in children is also of growing concern. Studies show that early environmental factors can impact the onset of rheumatoid arthritis later in life. Ensure a smoke-free environment in homes and cars and try to incorporate as many foods devoid of chemical additives as possible to lessen the chances of developing RA.
